IBF/IBO/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko (51-3, 45 KOs) knocked down the tough, awkward Tony "The Tiger" Thompson (31-2, 19 KOs) to retain his belts on fight night at the Color Line Arena in Hamburg, Germany. The opening round is rather slow-paced but Klitschko began to connect with his punches in round two, a round in which both fighters were cut by a headbutt. Klitschko continued to headhunt while Thompson started having good results to the body in the fourth. In round seven, Klitschko seemed to be making Thompson break down. Thompson got up gingerly after both fighters got tangled up and went down to the canvas in the tenth. The vigorous and spirited Klitschko finally dropped Thompson for the count in the eleventh with a spectacular right hand. Time was 1:22. What's next for Klitschko? It will be a defense against Alexander Povetkin later this year.Here are the results of the supporting bouts:
- WBO #1 cruiserweight Johnathon Banks (20-0, 14 KOs) took a workmanlike majority decision over Vincenzo Rossitto (30-6-2, 22 KOs) to claim the IBO title belt.
- European 154lb champion Zaurbek Baysangurov (19-0, 14 KOs) scored a seventh round stoppage of Ivan Gontsa (16-2-2).
- Unbeaten heavyweight Alexander Ustinov (11-0, 9 KOs) stopped Hans-Joerg Blasko (4-1) in round two.
