A split-decision is what, the now new WBO interim mini-flyweight champion, Ramón Garcia Hirales needed to mar the unbeaten record of Filipino young boxer Johnriel Casimero; handed the Pinoy his first loss in 15 fights.

Casimero lead the scorecards most of the fight however Hirales had a comeback performance that convince the judges to hand him good points; scores were 115-113 for Casimero, and 115-113, 115-113 in favor of the Mexican. Hirales moves to 14-1-1, 8 KOs, while Casimero falls to 14-1, 8 KOs.

UFC 119: Features Lytle-Serra rematch

Matt Serra and Chris Lytle will hook 'em up one more time in a rematch from The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 4 Finale when they throw leather at the upcoming UFC 119 event scheduled for the Conseco Fieldhouse on Sept. 25 in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Serra (11-6) narrowly squeaked past his fellow finalist on "The Comeback" edition of the Spike TV reality show. That win guaranteed him a shot at UFC Welterweight Champion Georges St. Pierre -- and there isn't a mixed martial arts fan alive that doesn't know how that turned out.

Unfortunately "The Terror" would give the belt back to "Rush" in their rematch at UFC 83 and go on to drop a unanimous decision loss to bitter rival Matt Hughes at UFC 98 one year later.

The stocky grappler returned to the win column with a technical knockout victory over Frank Trigg at UFC 109 earlier this year. Serra has only competed four times since his 2006 bout with Lytle -- compared to the 11 scraps clocked in by "Lights Out."

An awesome finish by an awesome fighter. WBA interim super flyweight champion Nonito ‘Filipino Flash’ Donaire (24-1, 16 KOs) scored an eighth round TKO over Hernan ‘Tyson’ Marquez (27-2, 20 KOs). Donaire fought from the southpaw stance for the first four rounds and had mixed results. He switched back to his normal orthodox stance in round five and dropped Marquez with a series of big punches. Donaire was in command from that point on. The end came in round eight when Marquez was floored by a hard uppercut in round eight.

WBO Featherweight Champion Juan Manuel Lopez (29-0, 26 KOs) scored a spectacular second round KO over Bernabe Concepcion (28-4-1, 15 KOs) on Saturday night at the Coliseo de Puerto Rico JosÃ© Miguel Agrelot in Hato Rey, Puerto Rico. In a wild round one, Juanma dropped Concepcion and went for the KO but was knocked down himself by Concepcion near the end of the round. Lopez roared back to floor Concepcion twice in round two, the second time the bout was stopped . Time was 2:37. Next up for Juanma is a bout with Mexican ring legend Rafael Marquez.

UFC 116: Brock made Carwin submit

I was not able to watch UFC 116 on TV for I was busy doing something else, yah' something else; so I missed one of the greatest and 'biggest' fights in UFC history. Brock Lesnar against Shane Carwin could had me jumping and shouting in excitement with a beer on my hand... it didn't happen. So sad.

It's only 20 minutes ago that I've learned about the outcome of the fight, Brock had made Carwin submit thru an 'arm-triangle-choke'! Wow! So Lesnar won the fight thru submission? I was expecting a ground-and-pound from the big man. But I guess Brock had a plan B (submission) for he was hurt bad on the first round, he was even cut. A big comeback for him on the second round. Amazing.

And so, the record of Carwin had been marred, I would definitely like to see a rematch for this fight; I'm sure a lot of UFC fans do, too.

UFC 115: Liddell Got Iced by Franklin

It was, to many, an unexpected way for the main event of UFC 115 to end between Rich Franklin and Chuck "Ice Man" Liddell. Also for me, my prediction was it would be Franklin going down. I was wrong.

A big out-of-nowhere right hand hit Liddell that made him out-cold; Franklin followed up with a couple more punches and it was all over. Did Franklin put Chuck's career out for good? Well...

Former two division world champion Miguel Cotto (34-2,27 KOs) has taken over another division, dethroning WBA super welterweight champion Yuri Foreman (28-0, 8 KOs) in nine rounds on Saturday night in the first fight card at New York City’s famed Yankee Stadium site in 34 years. Now trained by Emanuel Steward, Cotto looked extremely sharp outboxing Foreman over the first six rounds and in the seventh round Foreman’s right knee buckled compromising his mobility. Someone at ringside threw in a towel in the eighth round and people entered the ring, but referee Arthur Mercante Jr. threw everyone out and continued the fight. Cotto continued to batter Foreman dropping him with a left to the body in round nine and the bout was waved off.

Rashad Evans wins UFC 114

It was all over, much has been said till it was done.

"Sugar" Rashad Evans had defeated Quinton "Rampage" Jackson via unanimous decision (UD) on their light-heavyweight grudge match for a possible title shot against Mauricio "Shogun" Rua. Evans controlled rounds 1 and 2, scored good points which would be enough to win the game but Rampage exploded in the last round - landed power shots that hurt Rashad. However, Evans was able to get up and maintain his composure and had even scored take-downs. It was an exciting fight that a lot of MMA/UFC fans would like to see a rematch.

Congratulations to both fighters.

UFC's White sliced out Kimbo

UFC president Dana White laid down the challenge to Internet phenom Kimbo Slice and the street fighter accepted it. Kimbo made it through his stint on Season 10 of "The Ultimate Fighter" and got two more fights with the promotion.

Slice went 1-1 in the UFC after the reality show, including a bad loss Saturday night at UFC 113 against Matt Mitrione. The fight was so one-sided, the UFC president decided to give Kimbo, 36, his pink slip.

"That's probably Kimbo's last fight in the UFC," White said. "Listen, Kimbo made it farther than I thought he would."

As White was exiting the press conference for a postfight television interview, he was asked one more time about Kimbo's future. A reporter pushed him on the "probably" in his original Kimbo quote. White then confirmed definitively that Slice was gone.

Unlike some cases where other high-profile fighters were sent packing, White sounded genuinely disappointed to fire him.

The former welterweight champion, Antonio "Tijuana Tornado" Margarito is back! A comeback victory is so sweet for him as he had won a ten-round unanimous decision over Roberto “La Amenaza” Garcia on Saturday night before a crowd of 17,000+ at La Plaza de Toros Monumental in Mexico. Margarito dropped Garcia in round one and was in command from the get-go. Garcia was game and aggressive, but Margarito was more accurate and effective with his combinations. Referee Guadalupe Garcia took a points from Garcia for a headbutt in round eight and a low blow in the tenth. Scores were 99-89, 100-88, 99-90.

UFC 113: Machida-Shogun 2

Edwin Valero ended life the coward way?

CARACAS, Venezuela – Former boxing champion Edwin Valero, who had a spectacular career with 27 straight knockouts and flouted a tattoo of President Hugo Chavez on his chest, hanged himself in his jail cell Monday after being arrested for stabbing his wife to death, police said.

The former lightweight champion used the sweat pants he was wearing to hang himself from a bar in the cell, said his lawyer, Milda Mora.

Valero, 28, had problems with alcohol and cocaine addiction and struggled with depression. He had previously been suspected of assaulting his wife and was charged last month with harassing her and threatening personnel at a hospital where she was treated for injuries.

Valero's 24-year-old wife, Jennifer Carolina Viera, was found dead in a hotel room on Sunday, and police said the fighter emerged telling hotel security he had killed her.

Valero was found hanging in his cell early Monday by another inmate, who alerted authorities in the police lockup in north-central Carabobo state, Federal Police Chief Wilmer Flores told reporters. He said Valero still showed signs of life when they took him down, but they were unable to save him.

The former WBA super featherweight and WBC lightweight champion was a household name in Venezuela and had a huge image of Venezuela's president tattooed on his chest along with the country's yellow, blue and red flag.

A man whose fists carried him from poverty in a small town to fame, Valero's all-action style soon earned him a reputation as a tough, explosive crowd-pleaser, and his last victory in Mexico in February over Antonio DeMarco brought his record to 27-0 — all knockouts. Venezuelans called him "Inca," alluding to an Indian warrior, while elsewhere he was called "Dinamita," or dynamite.

Valero had a turbulent disposition and had been in trouble with the law before, for violent incidents and problems with alcohol and drugs.

Last month, he was charged with harassing his wife and threatening medical personnel who treated her at a hospital in the western city of Merida. Police arrested Valero following an argument with a doctor and nurse at the hospital, where his wife was being treated for injuries including a punctured lung and broken ribs.

The Attorney General's Office said in a statement that Valero was detained March 25 on suspicion of assaulting his wife, but his wife told a police officer her injuries were due to a fall. When the boxer arrived moments later, he forbade Viera from speaking to the police officer and spoke threateningly to the officer, prosecutors said in a statement.

A prosecutor had asked a court to keep Valero in jail, the Attorney General's Office said. But a judge instead allowed him to remain free under certain conditions including that he appear in court every 90 days, said Mora, his lawyer.

Mora told The Associated Press that after the incident Valero was held for nine days in a psychiatric hospital in Merida, where he underwent police-supervised rehabilitation. She said people close to the fighter posted bail on April 7 and he was allowed to go free.

Silva is victorious | Penn falls

Anderson “The Spider” Silva retained his title, defeating Demian Maia via unanimous decision. The uneventful contest, which drew boos from the crowd, also drew a post-fight apology from Silva. ”I apologize to everybody. I don’t know what got into me,” he said.

Frankie Edgar found an “Answer” for “The Prodigy,” snaring the UFC lightweight title from BJ Penn via unanimous decision. The bout was largely waged on the feet as the crafty Edgar used head movement and fast feet to keep the previously unstoppable Penn off balance. The judges scored the bout 50-45, 48-47 and 49-46.

In a battle of legends, Matt Hughes goes 2-0 against the Gracie family, defeating Renzo Gracie via TKO in the final round. The former UFC welterweight champion picked the 43-year-old Gracie apart throughout the fight with a series of unchecked leg kicks. Hughes rocked a wobbly Gracie with a hard shot that sent the Brazilian back into the cage, prompting referee Herb Dean to intervene. Gracie was barely able to stand at the conclusion of the bout.

Rafael dos Anjos defeated Terry Etim with an arm bar in round two. The official time was 4:30. The loss was Etim’s first in the Octagon. With the victory, dos Anjos extends his UFC win streak to three.

Mark Munoz staged an incredible comeback victory, defeating Ultimate Fighter winner Kendall Grove via TKO midway thru second round to kick off the night’s main card.

Age is not the Real Deal

Age doesn't really matter.. to some, especially in the world of boxing.

47-year-old, four-time world heavyweight champion Evander "The Real Deal" Holyfield (43-10-2, 28 KOs) scored an eighth round TKO over 41-year-old Frans Botha (47-5-3, 28 KOs) on Saturday night at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas. Botha did well early but Holyfield came on in round six, hurt Botha in the seventh, knocked Botha down in the eighth and referee Russell Mora stopped it moments later. Time was :55. With the win Holyfield claims Botha’s WBF heavyweight belt.

“He is a very good defensive fighter,” Holyfield said after the fight. “He’s a smart fighter, too. His right hand had a lot of power and he’s also a very quick big man. I gave myself a 7. I can get better. I’d been off a long time and I know I can get better. I want to come back very soon.” Botha remarked, “Evander is a great fighter. He capitalized on my mistakes. I thought I had him going early. I have to go home and sit down with my team.”

Hopkins defeats Jones Jr

It was a sweet revenge for the fallen as he had risen to dominate.

17 years after their first fight, ring legend Bernard "The Executioner" Hopkins (51-5-1, 32 KOs) evened the score against 41-year-old fellow legend Roy Jones Jr. (54-7, 40 KOs) winning a foul-filled twelve round unanimous decision on Saturday night in a light heavyweight bout at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas. The first five rounds were measured, tactical and sometimes dirty, but things really heated up in round six after Hopkins went down from a seemingly light rabbit punch, then furiously went after Jones, continuing to fight even after the bell and the fighters had to be restrained by security. After a Hopkins rabbit punch in round eight, Jones responded with a rabbit punch that sent Hopkins to the canvas again. Hopkins went down for a third time from a borderline low blow in round ten. Action stopped in the eleventh so the ring doctor could look at a cut Jones sustained from a headbutt, ruled unintentional. A slow twelfth round brought boos from the crowd. In the end, Hopkins prevailed 117-110, 117-110, 118-109.

Ruiz had been Hayed

WBA heavyweight champion David "Hayemaker" Haye (24-0, 22 KOs) is still the champ after he had scored a 9th round TKO over 38-year-old former champ John Ruiz (44-9-1, 30 KOs) on Saturday night in Manchester, England. Haye dropped Ruiz twice in round one, the first time with the right hand almost immediately, the second time with a rabbit punch. Haye was deducted a point for the rabbit punch, but Ruiz was still given a count and no time to recover from the foul. A determined Ruiz survived the round. Haye floored Ruiz again at the end of round five and again early in round six. Ruiz’ corner finally threw in the towel to stop the punishment in round nine.

In round nine Ruiz continued to attack the Brit but at the end of the second minute the champion exploded with the right-left-right combination, hurting Ruiz, 38, badly with several crisp blows. As famed trainer Miguel Diaz appeared on the ring apron and began waving towel, referee Perez Pineda stepped in and halted the action at 2:01.

Abraham disqualified as Dirrell gets victory

In SHOWTIME’s much acclaimed “Super Six” super middleweight tournament, Andre Dirrell (19-1, 13 KOs) won by disqualification over previously unbeaten Arthur Abraham (31-1, 25 KOs) on Saturday night at the Joe Louis Arena in Detroit, Michigan. Dirrell dominated an inactive Abraham in rounds one and two. Abraham came on in round three, but Dirrell dropped an off-balance Abraham in round four. Dirrell again outworked Abraham in rounds five through seven. Abraham was cut over the right eye in round seven. An increasingly desperate Abraham tried to land a KO punch and floored Dirrell in the tenth, inexplicably waved off by referee Laurence Cole. After Dirrell slipped in the eleventh, he was knocked cold by Abraham. Abraham was disqualified by Cole at 1:13. At the time of the DQ, Dirrell was ahead 97-92, 98-91, 97-92. Abraham later insisted that Dirrell wasn’t down when he threw the final punch. A shaken Dirrell will be taken to the hospital for tests.

UFC 111: GSP still victorious, Carwin still undefeated

He is truly a complete MMA fighter as he had walked out of UFC 111 victorious once again. Georges St-Pierre was on top of his game (though he apologized to the fans for such performance) as he had scored a lopsided victory over Dan "The Outlaw" Hardy. We all know that GSP is a very skilled and talented fighter as he had always put Hardy on the ground, controlled the temp and shoot some submission moves.

On the other hand, Shane Carwin claimed the UFC interim heavyweight championship with a dramatic knockout of former champion Frank Mir at 3:48 of the opening stanza. The beginning of the end came as Carwin pinned Mir against the cage and reigned down a series of blows that sent Mir crumbling to the canvas. Carwin flattened Mir out and landed several more unanswered shots before the referee stepped in to save the Las Vegan from further damage.

With a 12-0 record, Carwin will likely meet heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar in July for a unification bout.

"Bones" Jones defeated Vera by TKO

"Why have a Thai match against someone who may be better than me at it?" was the answer of Jon "Bones" Jones when he was asked on why he had focused more on his striking that had made him score a first-round TKO over Brandon "The Truth" Vera.

Both, Jones and Vera, were both coming off losses and looking to become reestablished as contenders in the light heavyweight division.

When the round opened, Jones scored an early hip toss take-down but Vera scrambled back to his feet. The fighters exchanged strikes and Jones scored with a double leg take-down. From his back Vera landed an illegal up-kick to the face of Jones that seemed to hurt Jones. The referee took a penalty point from Vera and the fight resumed on the ground with Jones in the guard of Vera.

Jones postured up and landed a strong elbow that hurt Vera. Jones followed with several punches that made Vera roll away to escape the strikes and Jones landed more punches until the referee stopped the bout giving the TKO win to Jon Jones at 3:19 of round one.

Mayweather-Mosley would be another exciting event.

This time the spotlight will be back in Las Vegas, coming from Dallas. There is a chance that Pacquiao will be fighting the winner of the Mayweather-Mosley fight; however, seems like the Pacman would want Mayweather more than anybody else. Well, there are a lot of hopefuls.

Mayweather was bored by Pacquiao's last fight?

I believe that the pound-for-pound king and WBO welterweight champion, Manny "Pacman" Pacquiao put on a good fight against Joshua Clottey during their recent fight where the Filipino pride won via a one-sided unanimous decision; the thing that made the event looks like a not-a-pacquiao type of fight is that there was no knock-down. Seriously, a lot of people had predicted and expected that Clottey would hit the ground; it never happen. Because of this, a lot of critics are claiming that the Pacman had upset a lot of boxing fans.

Upset?

Oh c'mon! The victory itself is sweet and Pacquiao is phenomenal. Even team Clottey, I think, was not upset about the outcome of the fight; it was a privilege to fight the best boxer in the world today.

There is one thing that, I think, was upset not just for the victory of Pacquiao but even with the success of The Event held in Dallas, it's Floyd Mayweather Jr. The ever boastful Floyd had talked again saying that the effect of HGH to Pacquiao is just great; Mayweather also claimed that Manny put on a boring fight. Well, I remember Mayweather Jr., days back, saying something about focusing (talking) on his next fight with Shane Mosley instead of talking about Pacquiao; he just can't stop thinking about the Pacman. He's haunted.

Well, Mayweather should do his best to win against Mosley if he wants another shot to face Pacquiao in a multi-million mega-fight. Good luck to his next bout.

The World Boxing Council put to the vote of the WBC Board of Governors, the written appeal submitted by Mr. Hector Garcia, representative to Omar Niño, for a final and definitive resolution. The World Boxing Council has unanimously voted to ratify the decision announced last Saturday February 27th, in Guadalajara, Jalisco, being the result of the bout a technical draw and ordering a direct and immediate rematch between Rodel Mayol and Omar Niño.

WBC has officially notified both Rodel Mayol and Omar Niño that they have a deadline of 5 days to submit a written confirmation of their participation in this fight.

If Rodel Mayol declines to directly fight Omar Niño, the title will be declared vacant. If Omar Niño declines to fight Rodel Mayol in a rematch, the World Boxing Council will name a substitute fighter in accordance with the World Boxing Council Rules and Regulations.

Donaire was in command all the way before laying out Vargas for the count with a left uppercut at 1:33. After original challenger Gerson Guerrero failed his physical, Vargas, who was preparing for the WBC title at 108 lbs moved up two divisions on three days notice.

Other Results:
The full WBO bantamweight champion Fernando Montiel (40W-2L-2D, 30KOs) needed just 2:06 to annihilate previously unbeaten Ciso Morales (14W-1L, 8KOs). A left hand to the body put Morales down for the count.

In a clash for the vacant WBO interim bantamweight championship, #1 contender Eric Morel (42W-2L, 21KOs) took a split decision against #2 contender Gerry Penalosa (54W-8L, 34KOs). Two unintentional headbutts in round six left Penalosa with cuts over both eyes, but the 38-year-old Filipino upped the pressure down the stretch and seemed to deserve the decision. I knew this would happen! Edwin Valero keeping up his clean record, again, had an explosive and astonishing performance as he had defeated the Mexican, Antonio DeMarco, via TKO in the 9th round thus retaining the World Boxing Council (WBC) lightweight title. He had proved himself to be the better fighter as he had totally took control of the fight; he had dominated DeMarco despite having a cut on his face. Valero, of Venezuela, is just sensational elevating his career stats to 27W-0L-27KOs. Awesome!

Being outboxed and outclassed by the Venezuelan, DeMarco was exhausted and beaten at the end of the 9th round that prompted the referee to stop the fight. He had dropped his career fight record to 23W-2L-1D with 17KOs.

Valero to fight Pacquiao

Who doesn't want to fight the pound-for-pound king Manny Pacquiao? His name is like the number-one most wanted fighter on the list. Fight the Pacman for money, for honor, for bragging rights.

Edwin Valero said he would like to fight Pacquiao. Now that would be another must-see fight if it will happen. Valero would definitely would go up the weights if he wants the Filipino boxer to be with him in a ring. Being in his prime, I believe Valero can keep his strength and power if ever he would be in welterweight.

Pacquiao-Valero in the future? I would say "Yes" for it in a poll.

Randy Coture chokes Mark Coleman to victory

One legend had become victorious as the other fell. The battle of the two of UFC's legendary fighters is over.

Randy Coture, once again with an amazing performance, had dominated Mark Coleman and won with a rare submission victory (rear naked choke) during their bout for the UFC 109 [Relentless] event.

Couture had dominated the first round of the fight and had Coleman exhausted on the bell. On the second round, Randy had the chance to be on full mount and he was pounding on Mark, the latter then gave his back and this had let Couture established a rear naked choke. Tired and defenseless, Coleman decided to retire and tap.

Congratulations to Randy "The Natural" Couture for the impressive victory.

This is one good fight that I want to watch! Knockout artist and undefeated lightweight champion Edwin "Dinamita" Valero (26W-0L-26KO) of Venezuela will be fighting interim champion Antonio DeMarco (23W-1L-1D-17KO) of Mexico on their much anticipated world title showdown on Saturday night in Monterrey, Mexico.

I never expected this event will ever happen, but it's now on and for real!

The two legendary boxers and future Hall of Famers will finally collide for their much-anticipated and long-waited rematch; Bernard "The Executioner" Hopkins and Roy "The Terminator" Jones Jr. will face each other again after 17 years. The event is called The Rivals: Hopkins vs. Jones II.

Boxing fans had been wanting this rematch to happen after the two boxers first fight on May 1993 when Jones Jr. defeated Hopkins via unanimous decision for the vacant IBF Middleweight title.

The sure-fire bout will happen on April 3 at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas. This for for the ultimate bragging rights to leave no doubts to who's the better fighter. Hopkins (50-5-1, 32 KOs) and Jones (54-6, 40 KOs) are considered best fighters in boxing history.

Though I was not able to watch (live) their first meeting I can't wait to see this fight.

Erik "El Terrible" Morales wants to be champion again

After months of speculation and uncertainty if he will be fighting again, Erik "El Terrible" Morales from Tijuana had just confirmed that he would be back to fight again; ready to be world champion one more time. The question that's kept hanging is on what weight would he be fighting in.

There are talks that he will be entering the hot and exciting welterweight division where the names of Manny Pacquiao, Shane Mosley, Floyd Mayweather Jr., Miguel Cotto and Joshua Clottey are making some loud buzz. If some may not know, Morales was the last boxer to defeat the pound-for-pound champion Pacquiao during their first meeting of their trilogy match.

After a long rest, I've been thinking if Erik still got his power and speed; especially that he had lost his last four fights: unanimous decision against Zahir Raheem and David Diaz, a KO and a TKO from Pacquiao. Though he had claimed that he had been in the gym almost everytime, getting shape-up, the latest photo that I've seen is that he's somewhat overweight. Mosley for Mayweather?

So after years of waiting it's going to happen this year, Floyd Mayweather versus Shane Mosley. Or is it?

The Mayweather-Mosley fight had been on deck for a very long time that most boxing fans had almost believe that it will never happen, especially when Floyd had been saying that Mosley is not good enough for him. If the fight would really get ironed out then it would likely take place on May in Las Vegas, no official announcement yet. The only thing that I could be sure of is that there is no Top Rank-Golden Boy showdown.

For me, this would be a good and interesting matchup since the two great boxers had been throwing trash talks to each other till now. Mosley had been wanting to fight Mayweather. He is going to get it, hopefully.

Hopefully?

Well, if the camp of Mayweather will not be throwing their terms again about that random blood testing prior to fight then the bout will happen. Definitely.

There are talks around that Manny Pacquiao had said 'NO' to the random blood testing even though he's clean then how would Mosley react? 'NO! NO! NO!' (There was a claim that he'd been into 'it' before.)

I would say that Mayweather is doing a good thing in finding himself accepting Mosley as his opponent after the $40M fight with the Pacman went off. It would be better if it would really happen.

Lightweight Evan Dunham impressively submitted The Ultimate Fighter 8 winner Efrain Escudero in the final round of an exciting lightweight contest. The tap came at 1:59.

Battling back from tremendous adversity in the first round Aaron “A-Train” Simpson used his heavy hands and tremendous wrestling to defeat “Filthy” Tom Lawlor via split decision. Judges’ scorecards read 29-28 in favor of Lawlor and 29-28 twice in favor of Simpson.

If there’s one thing that can be learned from this sport, it's that there is never a sure-thing for any fight. No matter how much a fighter is favored to win, anyone can be beat on any given night. It’s that type of unpredictability that makes MMA so much fun to watch.

Miguel Cotto, Sr. passes at 57

Miguel Cotto Sr., the father of former two-division titleholder Miguel Cotto, passed away at the age of 57 in Puerto Rico on Sunday morning, the apparent victim of a heart attack, according to El Nuevo Dia.

The the Puerto Rican daily newspaper reported that Cotto Sr., who suffered from health problems such as asthma and sometimes needed the assistance of an oxygen tank to assist his breathing, was driving early Sunday, felt ill, stopped the car and reportedly asked for help before collapsing.

Cotto Sr., who served in the Puerto Rican National Guard for 25 years and worked Cotto's corner during the fighter's loss to Manny Pacquiao on Nov. 14, was very close to his son.

Evans defeats Silva, wants Rampage

Thiago Silva nearly knocked out former light heavyweight champion Rashad Evans with a pair of crushing right hands midway through the third round of their fight Saturday in the main event of UFC 108 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena.

Silva, though, did precious little other than that, particularly in the first two rounds, and that cost him a potential victory.

Evans (14-1-1) won the first two rounds and Silva (14-2) took the third, but Evans won a unanimous decision victory, earning 29-28 scores from all three judges.

The former UFC light heavyweight champion used his wrestling and his movement to keep Silva off-balance for most of the first two rounds. Silva never seemed to be able to mount much offense and Evans took him down repeatedly.

But the fight turned dramatically in the third. Silva connected with a pair of hard right hands as they were fighting near the fence and it was clear that Evans, who had been knocked out by Lyoto Machida in May at UFC 98 to drop the title, was in danger.

Silva, though, made a huge mistake by not pressing his advantage and going for the finish. Evans took a long time to gain his bearings and he fought the final minute or so very defensively, hoping to let the clock run out.

Evans said after the fight that he’s looking forward to a bout with another former champion, arch rival Quinton “Ranpage” Jackson. The men were supposed to meet after coaching on Season 10 of “The Ultimate Fighter,” but Jackson opted to make a movie instead.

Jackson, though, has returned to the UFC and Evans said Saturday he hopes that bout can be made.

WBC/WBO middleweight champion Kelly Pavlik (36-1, 32 KOs) scored a brutal fifth round TKO over WBC #3 Miguel Espino (20-3-1, 9 KOs) on Saturday night at the Beeghly Center in Youngstown, Ohio. Both fighters went right at each other immediately and traded punches non-stop. Espino was deducted a point for a punch after the bell in round one. The war continued through rounds two and three. Pavlik dropped Espino twice in round four and after he sent him to the deck in the fifth, Espino’s corner asked referee Steve Smoger to stop the fight. Time was 1:44.

The Prodigy had defeated the Nightmare!

BJ Penn was successful in retaining his belt by stopping Diego Sanchez via TKO due to a big cut on Diego's head, just above his left eye. A very big cut that the doctor called it off; Penn was winning the fight by points though.

It was a very good fight that it even reached the last round. Penn just dominated the whole fight; it started after he landed a devastating hook to the chin of Sanchez that made the latter groggy. That had changed the pacing of the game; the usually furious and fast Diego Sanchez was not playing his game anymore, he was always on-guard.

On the last round, Penn had landed a big head-kick that caused the cut on the head of Sanchez; the worst cut that Diego had, I believe. The fight had to be stopped. When they were showing the replay of that head-kick by Penn, just after that leg left the head of Sanchez the big cut revealed itself in slow motion. So sick.

BJ Penn is victorious once again. Simply amazing!

The queue to challenge UFC welterweight champion Georges ‘Rush’ St-Pierre isn’t so much of an organized line as it is a communal gathering. There is little order, no hierarchy, and only a few dwellers are forthcoming. Aside from a brave few, nobody seems to be in any ‘Rush’ to fight one of the most dominant champions in mixed martial arts today.

Rest assured, though, there are challengers and tests in the pipeline for St-Pierre. Only, unlike other champions’ pool of contenders, St-Pierre’s resembles more of a wasteland than a dish of fresh meat. In amongst a couple of brash newcomers from Britain are the resurrected zombies of previous conquests.

For a champion less disciplined and determined than St-Pierre, his selection of welterweight challengers could be problematic. Having beaten most of the leading welterweights in the world already, it would be easy for St-Pierre to rest on his laurels, fight once a year and fluctuate between weight divisions in pursuit of predicament.

As it is, St-Pierre couldn’t be happier at the summit of the competitive 170-pound weight class. While the Montreal mauler would appear to be a level or two above the rest of the swarming sharks, St-Pierre isn’t worried about future tests. Read more...

UFC 106: Forrest Griffin defeats Tito Ortiz via Split Decision

The comeback of the 'Huntington Beach Bad Boy' was rather bitter; after all his preparations and workouts, and his predictions, it all just resulted to a split decision loss to Forrest Griffin. A split decision?!

Griffin, as we all know, was defeated by Tito Ortiz on their first meeting via split decision as well. A revenge, this time, was successful.

Griffin played his game well, improved strikes and kicks; he landed combos to Ortiz that had force the latter to do takedowns. Tito Ortiz still has the ground-and-pound ability; this fighting style though was much avoided by Forrest by fighting on feet.

The kicks of Forrest had earned him the points, despite blood lost, that edged Ortiz to a split decision.

It was a great fight and surely the fans enjoyed it.

Despite the loss would this be a trilogy? A lot would wish for it.

Four more days to go and the battle is on!

A mob scene-and-a-half greeted two world champions today at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

Manny "Pacman" Pacquiao got the mob scene, Miguel Cotto got the half, when the two made their grand arrivals at the venue where they will face one another Saturday night on HBO-PPV.Around 11:30 a.m., Pacquiao made his entrance to a crowd that filled the casino’s front lobby. After speaking to TV media and greeting fans, he made his way to the Grand Garden Arena where, after testing out the ring, he sat down with print media for a 15-minute Q&A session.

One hour later, Cotto’s bus pulled up to the casino where a crowd, not quite so large, but just as loud, greeted the Puerto Rican champion. After a brief wave to the crowd and TV interviews, Cotto, likewise, was hustled to the arena where he will face Pacquiao on Saturday.

Both fighters proclaimed peak form and said they were unfazed by the hype surrounding the fight.

“I’m happy for that and understand this part of it all,” said Pacquiao. “I am focused on the fight.”

Despite diversions in the Philippines, Pacquiao said that training camp has been good.

“I’m, right now, ready to go,” he said, touching on the high altitude of camp in the Philippines, training with former champ Jose Luis Castillo and finishing up camp in Los Angeles at the Wild Card Gym.

Pacquiao shrugged off questions about Cotto being his toughest – biggest and strongest – opponent to date.

“I believe in myself,” he said, laughing. “I don’t want to say anything before the fight, but will wait until the ring.

“My motivation? I am fighting for the people who love boxing.”

How Pacquiao has been able to move up in weight, from 105 lbs., in his pro debut, to now fight as a welterweight, is still a wonder for the champ.

“It just happened,” he said. “I watch the tape [when a 105-pounder] and I’m a kid, cocky. I struggled to make weight and lost my flyweight belt because I couldn’t make weight.

“Now, I feel strong. Like David and Goliath, as an example. But if you believe in God and train hard, if you love your opponent and love everybody, it is good.”

As Pacquiao fended off questions about size and strength, Cotto was asked to explain how he would handle the Filipino’s speed.

“I’m prepared for the speed of Manny,” said Cotto. “I have equal hand speed and prepared well with my sparring partners.

“I’m prepared for anything.”

Though Pacquiao has left reviewing tapes to his trainer, Freddie Roach, Cotto says he has studied his opponent – mainly his first fights with Erik Morales and Marco Antonio Barrera.

“We have the key to the fight,” said Cotto. “Our camp has made the difference.”

When asked about who’s next, after Pacquiao, Cotto would not comment, but he did talk about those who are prematurely writing about a future Pacquiao-Mayweather matchup.

“Manny is the only thing in my mind right now,” said Cotto. “I don’t know what Manny thinks, but when we’re in the ring together Saturday night, he can think about whatever opponent he wants.

“It’s going to be just Manny and me and the referee. There’s nobody else.”

David Haye is the new WBA Heavyweight Champion after clinching a points victory over Nikolai Valuev. Fighting in front of a sell-out crowd of 8,000 fans in Nuremberg, Haye was ahead 116-112 on two cards, with the third judge ruling the contest a 114-114 draw. The clash drew a sensational peak market share of 40,5 percent (8,4 million viewers) on German free-to-air giant ARD. “It’s a dream come true,” Haye enthused afterwards. “I’ve fought the biggest heavyweight champion of all time and caught him with big shots. My speed was key tonight. He has a granite chin and took my punches. I’m a guy who says what he thinks and sometimes that upsets people but I’m full of respect for Valuev, he showed he can take some big shots.”

The Russian Giant was disappointed after his second defeat in 53 fights. “The fight reminded me of a marathon,” he said. “I had to run and chase him down all the time. For me it was more like a track and field competition. I had problems hitting him, he was very fast. I think the 12th round also made the difference.”

In the final round, Haye wobbled his opponent with a huge left uppercut. Throughout the entire 12 rounds, he had used his speed to stay out of trouble while launching occasional and well-timed attacks. “The plan was to make Nikolai miss and it worked,” Adam Booth said. “David stuck to the game plan well and fought a great fight.”

Alexander Zimin called the contest “a strange one”. He said: “There was a lot of running. David was very fast and he seemed to get even faster in the last six rounds. Nikolai did not what we had trained for. His attacks were not executed well. I don´t really know what I can say about this fight – it was strange.”

Next up for David Haye is the mandatory defence against John Ruiz, who scored a seventh-round TKO victory over Adnan Serin. “Ruiz is a strong fighter, but I will knock him out,” Haye predicted.

Top Rank CEO Bob Arum is not looking too far ahead but in the event Manny Pacquiao gets past Miguel Cotto on Nov. 14, the Hall of Fame promoter said a fight in a brand-new stadium being used by the Dallas Cowboys is a candidate to host the Filipino’s first fight in 2010. Arum said that while Las Vegas is a front-runner in staging a major boxing card, Dallas is keen in hosting a major show in its 50,000-seat venue and Pacquiao could be lined up to face Juan Manuel Marquez of Mexico in a third meeting there on March 13, 2010. The main supporting fight will feature Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., said Arum. But if Cotto wins against Pacquiao, Arum said the most sensible thing to do is to bring Cotto back to New York in June 2010–in time for the annual Puerto Rican Independence Day celebrations–for a huge show at Yankee Stadium.

The excitement for the heavyweight category in the world of boxing is now back!

The event "David vs. Goliath" is very much anticipated as the World Boxing Association heavyweight champion Nikolai “The Russian Giant” Valuev and David “The Hayemaker” Haye will square it off on Nov. 7 from Nuremberg, Germany.

Valuev (50-1, 34 KOs), from St. Petersburg, Russia, is the two-time and current WBA heavyweight champion and has fought and defeated a “Who’s Who” of heavyweight champions including Evander “The Real Deal Holyfield, John Ruiz (twice), and Sergey Lyakhovich. The question to be answered is will the smaller yet faster Haye bring his explosiveness to the heavyweight division against an opponent he will be giving away 9 inches in height and about 100 pounds in weight to. Lyoto “The Dragon” Machida wins via unanimous decision against Mauricio “Shogun” Rua with a all judges scoring the bout 48-47. Many people on the crowd felt it should be Shogun who won the fight as they went 'booooing' after Machida was announced as the winner.

A rematch should be scheduled for this two fighters; I would surely agree for it. To me it should have been Rua who won the fight, all throughout the fight it's him who throw and landed more strikes and kicks. Well it has been done but a rematch should happen.

As usual, many people are again thinking if the Filipino champion is strong enough to defeat the Puerto Rican or the question should be the other way around? Same question had been asked when Manny went up the weights to face David Diaz (from 130lb to 135lb), Oscar De La Hoya (145lb), Ricky Hatton (140lb); and yet he had proved himself as he had won those fights.

It's clear that Miguel Cotto is the underdog fighter here, but don't underestimate his superior boxing skills, he's got that powerful flush strike that he's been using with his previous fights.

This is surely a boxing match that we should be waiting for. The answers to our questions will surely be answered after.

Chavez destroys LeHoullier, Nietes won!

Jr middleweight “Son of the Legend” Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (40-0-1, 30 KOs) destroyed Jason LeHoullier (22-2-1, 8 KOs) in less than a round on Saturday night at the El Palenque Del Recinto Ferial, Tepic, Mexico. Chavez dropped LeHoullier with a left hook and got the stoppage with his follow up barrage. Time was 2:43. A fight with John Duddy was mentioned for Chavez next.

Bantamweight Alex Valdez (22-3-2, 15 KOs) scored an upset third round KO over reigning WBO champion Fernando Montiel (39-3-1, 29 KOs). Montiel dropped Valdez in round one, but Valdez floored Montiel in round two. Montiel was cut over the left eye by a punch in round one that later caused the bout to be stopped before the beginning of the fourth round. The fight was originally declared a technical draw, but changed to a KO for Valdez. Montiel’s title was not on the line.

In a clash for the undisputed WBO mini flyweight championship, WBO champion Donnie Nietes, (24-1-3, 14 KOs) won a controversial twelve round split decision over interim champion Manuel Vargas (26-3-1, 11 KOs). Vargas pressured Nietes the entire fight and was ahead 116-112 on one card, however Nietes prevailed 118-110, 116-110 on the other two cards.

Super flyweight Z Gorres (29-2-2, 15 KOs) won by TKO when Cruz Carbajal (29-18-2, 16 KOs) couldn’t come out for round six due to a dislocated arm.

Former two-time WBC lightweight champion Jose Luis Castillo (60-9-1, 59 KOs) scored a second round KO over veteran Carlos Urias (41-22, 30 KOs) in a welterweight bout.

Unbeaten super featherweight Brandon Rios (21-0-1, 14 KOs)scored a second round KO over Daniel Valenzuela (3-7).

Scores were 118-110, 117-112, 117-111. Iribe broke his right hand early in the fight.

UFC 102: Nogueira defeated the legendary Couture

It was a very good fight but at the end there was victorious.

UFC 102's main event bout between Randy “The Natural” Couture and Antonio Rodrigo “Minotauro” Nogueira was a show-all-what-you-have. Nogueira came out strong having the advantage from the tale-of-the-tape but the Hall-of-Famer Couture had shown that he still got the heart to stand toe-to-toe. It was an exciting fight. There were a lot of punches exchanged; as well as takedowns. At the end it all went to the judges' scorecards, Nogueira won via unanimous decision.

In a clash of former world champions known for their left hooks, Roy “Captain Hook” Jones, Jr. (54-5, 40 KOs) schooled Jeff “Left Hook” Lacy (25-3, 17 KOs) on Saturday night at the MS Coast Coliseum in Biloxi, Mississippi. An extremely sharp Jones methodically battered Lacy, becoming more dominant as the bout progressed. Over the last few rounds Jones landed at will. Lacy’s corner stopped the fight after round ten. The bout was delayed approximately 30 minutes when the Jones and Lacy camps had a disagreement about the gloves.

Donaire defeated Concepcion

In a clash for the vacant WBA interim super flyweight title, former IBF flyweight champion Nonito Donaire (22-1, 14 KOs) won a twelve round unanimous decision over ex-interim king Rafael Concepcion (13-4-1, 8 KOs) on Saturday night at the Hard Rock Hotel/Casino in Las Vegas. Concepcion was unable to win the title as he weighed-in four-and-a-half pounds heavy (actually at super bantamweight poundage). The difference in power was evident as Concepcion stalked Donaire. Donaire, however, landed many bombs of his own and showed a little more as he won 117-111, 115-113, 116-112.

The answers to the above questions may be uncertain but there is one thing I'm sure of, commentator Quinito Henson is again assuming. The great assumer!

Bernabe Concepcion was disqualified for punching Steven Luevano after the bell at the end of the 7th round of their fight and the referee had come up to a decision of disqualification for the Filipino boxer. However, I think Luevano stayed on the floor for too long; it's either he was acting or Concepcion's punch is just to powerful for devastation.

Well, it has been done and the Filipino fighter lost.

There's just one thing, Mr. Henson should stop assuming. When he talks it's like he knows everything.

WBO world featherweight champion Steven Luevano (37-1-1, 15 KOs) retained his title by disqualification when WBO #1 contender Bernabe Concepcion (29-2-1, 17 KOs) hit him sfter the bell to end round seven. Concepcion surprisingly applied little pressure allowing Luevano to control the pace and do what he does best: counterpunch. The bout ended when Concepcion floored Luevano with a big right hand clearly after the bell. Luevano was down for several minutes.

UFC 99: The Comeback - Franklin beats Silva

Not what I expected to be, but it has been done. The judges awarded Rich Franklin a unanimous decision over Wanderlei Silva at UFC 99 “The Comeback” on Saturday. Oddly for the third time on the night, ring announcer Bruce Buffer chose not to announce the scores at the Lanxess Arena in Cologne, Germany.

Fighting at a catch weight of 195 pounds, the two took turns controlling the first round, although it appeared Franklin did more damage in the opening five minutes.

The former UFC middleweight champion dictated the tempo in the next round. Silva finally connected and wobbled Franklin, bullsrushing him at the fence. Franklin survived and the fight returned to the middle of the cage.

In the third round, Silva looked tired but kept moving forward and scoring with punches. Franklin took the Brazilian fighter down in the final minute before he recovered and threw a few elbows as time went off.

In his prime, IBF/IBO flyweight champion Nonito Donaire (21-1, 14 KOs) crushed previously unbeaten Raul ‘La Cobrita’ Martinez (24-1, 14 KOs) over four rounds one-sided rounds on Saturday night at the famous Araneta Coliseum in Metro Manila, Philippines. Donaire, best known for for knocking out Vic Darchinyan, showed his power again in this fight flooring Martinez twice in round one, again in round two, and a final time in round four prompting referee Pete Podgorski to stop the fight even though Martinez appeared to be able to continue. Time was 2:42. It was Donaire’s third successful defense.

Viloria dethroned Solis

It happened again! This time in his homeland.

The "Hawaiian Punch", Brian Viloria, (25-2, 15 KOs) dethroned long time IBF champion Ulises Solis (28-2-2, 20 KOs) with a spectacular eleventh round knockout for their Jr. Flyweight bout. Viloria had a great start in the fight, hurting Solis in round one and landing good right hands in over the first five rounds. Solis was also cut over both eyes and had deducted points in rounds three and five for low blows. Over the second half of the fight, Solis began to outbox Viloria, but the “Hawaiian Punch” got his second wind late and dropped Solis to his knees with a huge right hand at 2:56 of round eleven. The champion was unable to beat the count. This is the second title reign for Viloria, who previously held the WBC belt. Solis was making his ninth defense of the belt.

Manny "Pacman" Pacquiao had shocked the whole world once again by retiring via TKO the legendary Oscar "Golden Boy" De La Hoya in the 8th round of their 'The Dream Match' event in Las Vegas. The Pacman and the Golden Boy both trained hard for the fight but there could only be one winner this time. Pacquiao had dominated all the first seven rounds until De La Hoya call it quits in the 8th.

De la Hoya: 'It'll be a disaster if I don't KO Pacquiao'

MANILA, Philippines - Manny Pacquiao is hoping to knock out the bigger Oscar de la Hoya. If the chance presents itself.

But not for de la Hoya. He expects to knock out Manny Pacquiao.

De la Hoya hinted in a media conference call on Monday (Tuesday morning, Manila time) that he is preparing for a quick ending - no more, no less.

"I will be extremely, extremely disappointed if this fight doesn't end in a knockout," de la Hoya said. "It will be a total disaster."

Just last week, de la Hoya couldn't be counted on to make a serious prediction as to how long the fight will last.

He sounded either sarcastic (De la Hoya's response to Freddie Roach's nine-round forecast? "We'll catch Pacquiao in five so we don't get to nine.") Or plain uninterested ("It may end in the seventh because that's my lucky number.").

Lesnar destroys a legend!

Brock Lesnar had defeated Randy Couture via stoppage in the 2nd round of their main event bout for the UFC 91 in Las Vegas.

The first round went out fine with changes of punches and takedowns. In the second round, Lesnar's fist caught the chin of Couture that made the latter fell on the canvas; Lesnar didn't miss the opporunity and followed Couture with fast strikes until the referee stopped the fight.

Calzaghe: Another legend killer!

To defeat the enemy you have to be like the enemy. That's what Joe Calzaghe did during his fight with the legendary Roy Jones, Jr and came out victorious and still undefeated. Calzaghe fought like the style of Jones.

Calzaghe retained his Light Heavyweight title beating down Jones via unanimous decision with three judges scoring the bout 118-109.

Jones dropped Calzaghe in round one with a glancing right hand and landed some clean shots in the second. But Calzaghe began to outwork Jones in the third and showed disdain for Jones' power by keeping his hands down between quick flurries.

King Abraham defeats Marquez

Unbeaten IBF middleweight champion "King" Arthur Abraham (28-0, 23 KOs) punished then stopped mandatory challenger Raul "El Diamante" Marquez (41-4-1, 29 KOs) on Saturday night at the Jako Arena, Bamberg, Germany. After some close early rounds, Abraham began to connect with hard shots in round three. Marquez landed some good body shots in the fourth, but the champion inflicted damage at the end of the round and controlled the bout thereafter. After taking heavy bombardment to the body from Abraham in round six, Marquez quit on his stool.

"He was very tough," said Abraham. "He's a very good boxer, but we're also not bad. I don't understand it. He gave up too early. I am sad about that. I wanted to step on the gas from the sixth round, but unfortunately it didn't work. He disappointed the audience.....I'm ready to box against Felix Sturm!"

A disappointed Marquez stated, "I tried, but he was very fast and each shot was precise. When the cut happened, I simply couldn't continue. I could see I was going to lose. He's a strong champion and there was nothing I could do. It was also self-preservation. I have children, a family and I'm a commentator. I have a future." It was the eighth successful defense by Abraham, who may have suffered a rib injury in the bout.

Rahman vs. Klitschko: Hot!

IBF/WBO/IBO heavyweight chammpion Wladimir Klitschko will now face ex-champ Hasim Rahman on December 13 at the SAP Arena in Mannheim, Germany. Klitschko was originally slated to face IBF mandatory challenger Alexander Povetkin, however Povetkin pulled out with an injury. Rahman is coming off a no-decision against James Toney on July 16. The Rock is rated #5 by the IBF.
